MOTORISTS from Portsmouth are being offered free tyre safety checks by a local specialist.

Portsmouth Protyre is supporting TyreSafe and its Tyre Safety Month and is inviting people to have a complimentary tyre safety check from now until Monday October 31.

Mark Prestedge, the manager of Portsmouth Protyre on London Road in Hilsea, said: ‘are

We are an organisation set up to raise awareness of the importance of the dangers of defective and worn tyres.

‘We have supported TyreSafe and its Tyre Safety Month for many years now. It highlights the dangers of driving on tyres that have insufficient tread depth, making them both illegal and dangerous.

‘Vehicles with tyres that do not have the legal amount of tread pose a danger to the driver and to other road users. Stopping distances are increased and even more so in wet weather conditions, cornering ability is reduced and the chance of aquaplaning is a higher risk, all as a result of illegal tread depth.’

Drivers who break the law face a £2,500 fine and three penalty points per illegal tyre.
