A unique musical event is taking place in Portsmouth to celebrate the launch of National Music Day.

Office workers and shoppers are in for a surprise on Friday, June 5 when the BBC, Portsmouth Music Hub and more than 500 children from schools across the city will entertain the crowds in Guildhall Square.

They will perform Anna Meredith’s body percussion piece ‘Connect It’, which uses clapping, stamping, whispering and shouting instead of instruments.

The free event takes place at 11.10am.

Sue Beckett, director of Portsmouth Music Hub said: ‘It’s going to be a surprising and spectacular event, bringing music to life in the most unconventional way.

‘I guarantee that nothing like it has ever been seen in Guildhall Square.’

The BBC is holding the day to inspire a generation of children and young people to get creative with music and to inspire them to develop their own responses.
