I WONDER if you were able to do anything for Sport Relief, to help raise money for those in the UK and abroad who desperately need help?
Sometimes it’s hard knowing what to do to help – especially if you’re not so sporty! So we organised something for our congregations in Fareham to do together.
Around 40 children and adults from the various churches in Fareham decided to spend an afternoon walking around the town – and being sponsored to do so.
We walked five kilometres between the various churches.
We started at St Columba Church, and went to Hill Park Baptist, Our Saviour Lutheran, St Peter and St Paul, Sacred Heart Catholic, the Methodist, Holy Trinity, and Fareham Community churches along the way before ending up at Fareham URC.
I organised it with Ian Corless, an elder at URC, and Paul Bedford, the URC minister, but the idea came from the young people themselves.
They wanted to raise money for those who are not as fortunate as themselves.
They initially wanted to do the Sport Relief mile, but were disappointed to find that all the local events were taking place on Sunday morning, when we are gathering in our churches to worship God.
So we decided to do this sponsored walk around Fareham instead on a Sunday afternoon.
Not only was it a great opportunity to raise money for Sport Relief but it was great to see the generations coming together, walking side by side and chatting together.
For me it was a great symbol of multi-generational, ecumenical discipleship as well as great fun and supporting a good cause.
People might think that churches are constantly raising money to repair their buildings, or to pay for the activities they offer to their local communities.
That’s true, but it’s also true that churchgoers are among the most generous people in the UK when it comes to supporting other charities as well.
I’m constantly surprised by the way that people from our churches will volunteer to help others, and donate money to support those in need.
The money is still coming in but we’re hoping to have raised about £700.
