STAGE IS SET Children can take part in a theatre summer school

ALL the world is a stage for children taking part in a week-long musical theatre summer school.

Based at the Kings Theatre in Southsea, the West End Musicals Summer School will run from this Monday to Friday and is bound to turn any youngster’s holidays into a Summer of Fun.

Joanna Bennington, the youth theatre co-ordinator at the Kings, said the summer school was an excellent opportunity for youngsters to build confidence and experience the magic of the stage.

Ms Bennington said the children would learn different showbiz disciplines.

She said: ‘They’ll be trained in what we call the “triple threat”. That’s singing, acting and dancing.

‘If you’re well-versed in those three skills then you can pretty much get any job you want in theatre.’

Ms Bennington said there were 30 places available, and bookings could be made for children aged 10 to 15.

She said there was also a course for 10 to 16-year-olds who wanted to learn backstage skills.

She said: ‘That’s a great thing to do for young people who might not be as comfortable in the spotlight.

‘They can learn stage management, lighting and sound operation, as well as creating pieces for sets and props.’

The summer school builds up to a performance on Friday evening on the Kings’ historic stage in front of the children’s families and friends.

Ms Bennington said: ‘It’s amazing the challenges they put themselves through and the development they have during the week.

‘It’s great to see the transformation of the kids when they realise that they really can do this.

‘After the performance, they come off the stage buzzing and saying things like “can we do that again?”’

The summer school is taught by Simon Barry from New Pantomime Productions and takes place from 9am to 5pm each day.

It costs £140 for the week and there is a sibling discount available. For more information call the theatre box office on (023) 9282 8282.
