Glebe House is top for care home activities
PRIZE Alun Thomas, Mel Bennett and Jeremy Nixey from Shaw Healthcare
GENTLE exercise and walks down memory lane have earned a care home a top award.
Glebe House in Stein Road, Southbourne, West Sussex, was given the best activity-based care award by Shaw Healthcare.
Activities co-ordinator Janet Silsby was singled out for her dedication to the wellbeing of residents with regular exercise classes, known as chairobics, and reminiscence groups.
The groups give the elderly residents of the home a chance to talk about the past with each other – what they used to eat, their favourite old films and what they used to wear.
Visitors and staff were invited to nominate individuals in recognition of their special contributions towards the care they provide.
Mrs Silsby was unable to collect her award as she is unwell but it was picked up on her behalf by Glebe House manager Mel Bennett.
Mrs Bennett said: ‘I am so proud of Janet and all the hard work she puts in, she is a breath of fresh air and makes a huge difference to the lives of the residents at Glebe House.
‘On top of the activities Janet has recruited a team of volunteers who go shopping with the residents and spend time simply talking to them.
‘Janet makes sure the residents’ emotional needs are met and fulfilled.’
The annual awards took place this week at Shaw’s regional office in Horsham, West Sussex.
