A SERVICE was held to mark 50 years since the refurbishment of a church and signal the start of a new era.
St Luke’s Church at the now-defunct Royal Hospital Haslar in Gosport was the venue for the service yesterday.
About 150 people attended the service, which was officiated by the Church of England Bishop of Portsmouth, the Rt Rev Christopher Foster and the Venerable Ian Wheatley, Archdeacon of the Royal Navy.
Eric Birbeck of Haslar Heritage Group, which organised the service, said: ‘We wanted to mark the occasion so we invited Bishop Christopher Foster who jumped at the chance, which we were absolutely bowled over by.
‘It was beyond my wildest dreams.’
