Gardeners were rewarded for their efforts at the recent Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent in Bloom Awards.

Stevyn Ricketts, the head of Streetscene, hosted the event at Thorngate Halls and Fred Dinenage from Meridian, again attended to present the awards, something to which Fred and award recipients always look forward.

The competition was judged by Gosport Borough Council’s contractors, Horticultural Services by Sodexo, which also sponsored the event.

They said they were surprised and delighted by the wonderful hidden oases they found dotted around the borough.

They were also impressed by the level of expertise in the creation and planting of the various gardens.

With contrasting styles and a high standard of horticulture on display, they found it difficult to choose the winners.

Councillor Graham Burgess, the chairman of the community board at Gosport Borough Council, said: ‘I would like to thank the residents for the pride and keen interest they take in not only their own gardens but also in improving areas within the borough as part of a community project.

‘For example, this year’s Outstanding Achievement Award went to the Alverstoke Woman’s Institute.

‘It approached the council hoping to be able to help out with a bit of gardening once a week.

‘It has gone on to adopt an area within Stanley Park and is working wonders in Osborn Gardens.’
