A FESTIVAL celebrating all that is good about Gosport will dominate the town for two weeks next month.
Celebrate! Gosport is an event organised by the borough council featuring activities and events across the area.
The festival will start on Saturday, June 11, incorporating Gosport’s Big Day Out on June 12, and the HMS Sultan Show on June 18 and 19.
It will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display at Stokes Bay on Saturday, June 25.
Councillor Mark Hook, leader of Gosport Borough Council, said: ‘It’s all kinds of activities that will hopefully portray Gosport at its best.
‘It’s not only sporting events but there are cultural activities as well.
‘It’s just to try and put on some good activities for the people of Gosport and portray Gosport in a positive light.
‘It’s not only for local people, but for people who want to visit too.’
Some of the events on offer include an open day at Fort Brockhurst, taster sessions for judo, hockey, dance aerobics and zumba, a talk about the history of the Gosport Ferry and a teddy bears’ picnic.
People will also be given the opportunity to fly in a helicopter from the airfield at HMS Daedalus.
The grand finale will feature a programme of events including performances from the Big Noise Samba Band, the Gosport and Solent Brass Band, and a Queen tribute act, before the fireworks in the evening.
‘What’s important is to show the variety that we have to offer in Gosport,’ added Cllr Hook.
‘Too often we hear there’s not a lot to do in Gosport and this is just a snapshot over a two-week period.
‘It may just open people’s eyes as to what Gosport has to offer.
‘I think it’s great. Let’s just hope that the weather is kind and people turn out in their thousands for the many events.’
