Gosport sailor Alex Thomson is heading back to the UK to recuperate from surgery in a bid to rejoin a round-the-world race.
He could not start the Barcelona World Race last week after having his appendix out just two days before he was due to set off.
Alex is now travelling home to finish his recuperation and is aiming to rejoin his boat Hugo Boss for the 90-day race.
Organisers of the race and his fellow skippers agreed that his boat would be allowed to start the race with the team's substitute skipper, Wouter Verbraak, and Alex will be able to join the boat after he is declared medically fit to sail.
Alex said: 'I am really pleased with my progress so far.
'I have had an operation but I feel very positive.'
