FOUR days will be dedicated to celebrating the heritage and history of Gosport.

In September, Gosport is taking part in the Heritage Open Days, which encourage people to discover different sites in the town.

We have got many events happening and so many different ones which is brilliant.

More than 60 events will be held over the four days with free entry and activities for adults and children.

The national project is on from September 10 until September 13 with events happening in all major towns.

Portsmouth is holding nine events and Havant and Fareham both have one. Gosport, which took part in the Heritage Open Day pilot 23 years ago, has 66 events.

Philippa Dickinson has been helping with the preparations.

She said: ‘Gosport has got involved in the Heritage Open Days and it is astonishing to think this is going to be the 23rd year.

‘We have got many events happening and so many different ones which is brilliant.

‘The key thing about the Heritage Open Days is that sites and attractions that aren’t always open to the public open their doors especially for it.

‘That is a great experience.’

Two of those attractions include the former bakery and slaughterhouse sites at Royal Clarence Yard.

Royal Hospital Haslar is opening its doors.

But many of the town’s other attractions are also taking part including HMS Alliance, The Diving Museum and the Explosion! Museum.

Philippa added: ‘People always think heritage means boring history but the history of Gosport is anything but.

‘There is ancient history but also modern history, which is very interesting.

‘Activities for children will be happening so there is something for all the family.

‘We have some new things happening this year like a concert at HMS Sultan.’

A photograph competition is being held for youngsters.

Pupils from Gosport schools have been asked to submit a picture of what heritage means to them.

The shortlisted images will be made into an exhibition at the Discovery Centre in the high street. Entries must be in my August 24 with the pictures being displayed during the Heritage Open Days.
