FIRE fighters from Cosham are tackling a bonfire that has got out of control near the Tipner firing range in Portsmouth.
Police officers are also at the scene of the fire, which broke out at 5.15pm on open grassland south of the range, off Harbour Way, Tipner.
Sergeant Rob Sutton, of Hampshire Constabulary, said: ‘They are gorse bushes that have set alight, and the fire is contained in that area. There is no risk of it spreading.
‘Somebody has set a little fire, like a bonfire, which has got out of control and where everything is dry it’s caught on fire.’
Drivers on the M275 are being warned to beware of the billowing smoke. It is currently rising high enough not to be a problem, but could change if the wind picks up.
Meanwhile, Firefighters from Southsea are tackling a small grass fire off Burrfields Road in Copnor, which broke out at 4.53pm, using beaters.
