AN HISTORIC Gosport garden has been voted one of the best in the country.

The Crescent Gardens in Alverstoke has been awarded the Green Flag award for the 10th time.

It is owned by Gosport Borough Council, which looks after the garden alongside a group of volunteers called The Friends of Crescent Gardens.

These volunteers spend hours looking after the traditional garden all year round.

Councillor Graham Burgess, the chairman of the council’s community board, said: ‘Crescent Gardens is a delightful place and when sitting there with the historic buildings in the background you could think yourself whisked back in time.

‘The Friends of Crescent Gardens don’t just plant everything in the garden, they ensure the plants used fit in perfectly with the period of the garden and of the beautiful Georgian buildings which overlook the garden.

‘Their commitment to not only looking after the garden but the time spent in researching and sometimes having to source the correct plants is incredible.

‘It is their commitment and work that is recognised in this award.’

The award is one of 1,424 handed out in the country this year.

The gardens now have the chance to win another award.
