A COUNCIL has won a four-year battle over illegal homes.

Christopher Francis Searle and Jimmy Roy Searle put up two mobile homes and a caravan, and redeveloped stable buildings for residential purposes in Three Cornered Piece, East Harting, Chichester, in 2009.

They also created a widened access track to the land and sewage treatment works.

Chichester District Council and the South Downs National Park Authority battled through the county courts and subsequent appeals by the pair to the Secretary of State and the High Court.

Each time the local authority’s case was upheld. The greenfield land has now finally been cleared.

Council leader Heather Caird said: ‘Our enforcement team has worked tirelessly over a number of years for this outcome.

‘We were determined to battle on. We will do all we can to preserve the beauty of the district and this case sends a clear message that we take very seriously anything that harms the character and appearance of this part of the South Downs National Park.’
