DOZENS of individuals and local businesses have chipped in to expand the gym at Crofton School.

Cramped conditions had meant limited equipment for children at the school’s gym club. The new storage extension was opened on Tuesday.

Most of the builders attended the ceremony, alongside Jocelyn Hunt, a gymnast on the Great Britain team.

Gym club leader Sarah Yeomans said: ‘We started with a gym centre in January 2010 and realised we wouldn’t have enough space.

‘We had lots of children on the waiting list so we decided we’d need to build an extension to store more equipment.

‘The children think it’s fantastic, and there’s more variety for them to learn moves.

‘That we’ve now got space to store Olympic bars and a sprung tumble track is great.’

Caretaker Richard Lyons had played an important role, she added.
