Firefighters have been called to deal with a blaze at the Harvester restaurant in Fareham

Two crews from Fareham and one from Cosham were called at 1.40pm today to The Buccaneer, The Avenue, after smoke and flames were spotted coming from the extractor fan.

The fire started in the kitchen on the ground floor of the two-storey restaurant.

Fire crews battled for around an hour to extinguish the flames.

Around a dozen members of staff were evacuated, nobody was hurt.

The South Coast Ambulance Service and its specialist heart unit were on standby in case of emergencies with the fire crew.

A spokesman from the Harvester said: ‘The evacuation went well and nobody was harmed. It is under control now and we will be working hard to establish the cause. We are just glad that everybody is safe.’

Passer-by Carl Walker, 24, from Fareham, said: ‘We were driving passed when we saw the fire engines and we wondered what was going on. I bet that’s going to one hell of a refit now.’
