THE LIGHTS will go off at a council in support of Earth Hour.

The international initiative was set up by the charity World Wildlife Fund and Havant Borough Council has thrown its support behind it.

On Saturday the council will turn off all non-essential lights in the Civic Centre and the Southmoor depot between 8.30pm and 9.30pm – declared Earth Hour around the globe – to reduce its carbon footprint.

Famous landmarks and large organisations around the world will join in.

In addition the council is encouraging employees and councillors to take part.

Last year over 1.8billion people across 135 countries over every continent took part, sending a message to world leaders on the need to take positive and urgent action to tackle climate change.
