HAVANT firefighters were called out to help battle a tower block blaze in Southampton.

The fire engulfed a six-storey block of flats Wyndham Court, off Commercial Road, on Friday night.

A multi-role vehicle from Havant joined fire engines from five other services across the area in fighting the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by a boiler explosion.

Five people were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation, with three being taken to hospital and two being treated at the scene.

A total of 64 firefighters attended the fire, which broke out at around 8pm and was extinguished by 10.30pm.

Group manager Kevin Oxlade said a rabbit and a kitten had been rescued and an investigation will now be carried out to discover the blaze’s exact cause.
