SIXTY employees from Southern Electric are converting their energy into pedal power for a big fundraising day.

The team, from Southern Electric’s IT and Customer Services divisions at Penner Road, Havant, are saddling up and training for the London to Brighton cycle ride in June after a rallying call enthused more people than expected.

Allan Smith, joint team co-ordinator, said: ‘My colleague, Mark Huggins, the other joint team co-ordinator, is going to cycle the London to Brighton for the fourth year, and along with a couple of others he asked some of us whether we would like to do it as well.

‘Before we knew it, we had all sorts of people saying “yes” and we were suddenly up to 60 people.

‘We’re doing it largely for the British Heart Foundation which is the ride’s nominated charity but also to give moral support to another colleague, Owen Chewtor, who fractured a vertebra at the beginning of the year, and had been the initial driving force in organising the ride.

‘He’s unable to do the ride, but instead he’s taken on some of the organisation, including arranging a coach for us and will be cheering us on.

‘We have a real mix of people doing it, from seasoned cyclists to people who haven’t sat on a bike for a long time.’
