A MAJOR food bank in Havant is seeking volunteers and extra help from local businesses.

The Beacon Food Bank needs more volunteers after seeing an upsurge in demand from local families who are struggling to put food on the table.

Ruth Scott, co-ordinator for the food bank, said: ‘Beacon food bank is an independent food bank situated on the first floor of the Meridian shopping centre in Havant.

‘Local supermarkets Asda Walmart and Waitrose are actively involved in supporting the work of the food bank. ‘Now more volunteers are needed to help cope with the increased demand for its services.

‘Volunteers are required to help with a variety of tasks, from sorting food and preparing hampers, helping on promotional days, to car drivers willing to collect food from shops and businesses.’

An information session has been organised for Saturday, June 1 from 11am until midday.

Businesses can also help by becoming collection points for food donations.
