A CHILDREN’S author has ‘adopted’ a local independent bookshop.

The Hayling Island Bookshop will now benefit from the increased support of Blue Peter Award-winning children’s author Ali Sparkes.

Launched by a website featuring a number of literary talents – trappedbymonsters.com – the project aims to pair up writers and bookshops in the hope of giving a boost to struggling independent sellers.

Hayling Island Bookshop owner, Marie Telford, said: ‘We are very pleased indeed that Ali has chosen us to be her adopted bookshop, she is one of our favourite authors and rapidly becoming a national favourite too.

‘Since she adopted us we have had enquiries for signed books from the UK and overseas and have already sent one out to New England in the USA.’

Ali will provide the bookshop with signed posters and copies of her books on request and will be making appearances in the store over the coming months.

She said: ‘In these tricky times many bookshops are struggling – whether they’re independents or big chains – and we authors and illustrators want to show our support.

‘We’re not going to be painting the spare room, having a social services check and then tempting the nervous bookshop into the house with a plate of Pop Tarts – we’re just getting involved with our adopted bookshop a bit more than average.’
