PEOPLE are being urged to get their electric blankets checked before using them again.
Hampshire County Council has teamed up with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service to offer free safety checks throughout September.
In the past 16 years, around 17,000 blankets have been tested in Hampshire with approximately 45 per cent failing the safety checks, which could lead to house fires.
The main problems were poor wiring, faulty controls or no protection against over-heating.
Last year, a number of blankets were failed by the testing engineer as they were more than ten years old and had reached the end of their safe working life.
Leader of the council, Cllr Roy Perry, said: ‘As the winter nights draw in, it is not only important to stay warm, but to stay safe.
‘I would urge anyone who owns an electric blanket to take advantage of this excellent free opportunity.’
