DESCRIBED as a Florence Nightingale, the winner of Carer of the Year was humbled to pick up the trophy.

Shirley Young is manager of the Kinross Nursing Home, in Havant Road, Drayton, and the team were a winner at this year’s Best of Health Awards.

She said: ‘I didn’t dream that we would win it. The staff will be proud, I am proud of them.

‘I’m dedicated to my job, I love it and it’s my life at the moment. I’m shocked we won.’

The nursing home was nominated by Dean Sotnick.

He said: ‘My grandmother had been looked after very well by the staff, but in particular Shirley Young.

‘She had not been in the best of health, but with Shirley’s attention and expert care, she looked after her impeccably and has been a Florence Nightingale and a shining star.

‘She has always gone beyond the call of duty and been the reason why my grandmother saw in her 100th birthday.

‘I feel that it is Shirley’s diligence, leadership and care that residents have been able to enjoy their extended lifespan.’

Admiral Care were runners up in the category.
