THE Roman Catholic Bishop of Portsmouth has been diagnosed with cancer.

Bishop Crispian Hollis has sent a letter to the clergy of the Diocese of Portsmouth to tell them of his recent diagnosis.

In his letter he says he had a scan at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, last month which revealed he has bowel cancer.

He is awaiting more tests but expects to have major surgery sometime in September.

Bishop Crispian announced in March that he would be retiring at the end of this year after his 75th birthday.
