BUS drivers are getting the chance to learn about the importance of being dementia aware.

Operator First is staging its first Hampshire Dementia Awareness event in Hampshire and has organised it with Solent Mind.

It’s designed to help bus drivers and managers gain a greater understanding of the challenges faced by customers who are living with dementia.

The event will have a driver’s dementia friends session organised by the Dementia Alliance, a question-and-answer session between drivers and people with the condition and their carers, followed by a role reversal exercise so each gains a greater understanding of the issues faced coping with the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Society will be providing the training.

Natacha Tagholm, regional customer services manager, said: ‘By understanding more about the disease, our drivers will know how to handle what could be potentially difficult situations.’

The session takes place at Southsea fire station on Friday.
