CQC rates Havant care home as outstanding

A CARE home has received praise for its hard work after being rated as outstanding by a health watchdog.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) made an unannounced visit to the home on West Street, in Havant, and found staff were committed in ensuring health needs were met and that residents led fulfilling lives.

Run by Hampshire County Council, the care home looks after people with learning disabilities. Some have been previously involved with the police or found it difficult living in other homes.

During the visit, the CQC inspector looked at five criteria.

‘They rated the home outstanding for being effective, caring and responsive and good for being safe and well-led.

The report said: ‘Rather than minimising risks to people by reducing their opportunities to live a full life, people were supported to develop links with the community.

‘There was a strong emphasis on supporting people in the least restrictive way possible. This allowed some people to flourish where in past placements they had been regarded as challenging.

‘Staff were committed and excelled in ensuring people’s health care needs were met.’

The inspector also noted: ‘Staff consistently supported people to be as independent as possible and were proactive and creative in the ways they did this to ensure people’s lives were fulfilled.

‘We found the culture of the service was one of empowerment for both staff and residents.’

The care home has three residential blocks and can care for up to 17 people. It has short-term minimal risk care, long-term care and a service for residents who need more challenging support.

Councillor Liz Fairhurst, executive member for adult social care at the council, said: ‘This outstanding CQC report is wonderful news and testament to the dedication and hard work of our staff.

‘It is also a reflection of the levels of trust and respect established between staff and people living at the home.’

Jonathan Gilbert, manager, added: ‘We are delighted with the report.

‘The team have worked really hard to achieve this and it shows just
what a special place West Street is
for everyone who lives and works here.’
