TOP doctor Partha Kar won the hearts of our judges at this year’s Best of Health Awards.

The diabetic consultant from Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, was named Hospital Doctor of the Year at this year’s awards ceremony held at the Portsmouth Guildhall.

He was nominated by patient Laura Cleverly, 26, who suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

Before she met Dr Kar, she was regularly missing appointments and not getting the vital information she needed to help live her life with the condition.

Since being under the care of the doctor, she says her life has been turned around completely, and together the pair have created a Facebook group and Twitter account to raise the profile of Type 1 diabetes. It is hoped to engage younger people to come forward and make sure they are looking after themselves.

Dr Kar said: ‘Getting an award is great, but when you know you’ve been recognised by patients it’s different and makes it that extra special.

‘Laura is a very motivated girl herself and she’s trying to do something for the community and giving a voice to younger people, which is great.

‘I’m very grateful for this award.’
