THE region’s children’s heart specialist unit is under review again following a decision made by the health minister.

A three-month consultation was held nationwide over proposals which saw four centres close – but the children’s congenital heart services at Southampton General Hospital remained open.

But Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has referred the plans to the Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP), following lobbying from councillors in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire, who have concerns about the closure of the Glenfield unit in Leicester.

Because of this, the whole plan will be reviewed.

The IRP formally review contested proposals for NHS service change.

It is due to report back on February 28, next year.
