RESPITE for young disabled people has been given a huge boost.

Smile Support and Care has been handed £10,000 from Basepoint towards its fundraising appeal for the new respite care centre, in Hemlock Road, Waterlooville.

Despite the building now being complete, a further £180,000 is needed to kit it out with equipment, furniture, fixtures and fittings, ready to open next year.

Basepoint Centres provide office space to businesses across the country, and are owned by grant giving charity The Act Foundation.

Theresa Elliott, head of fundraising at Smile, said: ‘Basepoint supported us back in 2012 with a balloon release on the site where the centre now stands, to help get the building work under way.

‘We were thrilled to welcome them back today, to see the centre and present us with a cheque for £10,000.

‘This contribution will fund the play equipment in the garden which will be specially adapted for severely disabled children.’
