THE trust that provides community and mental health services to Portsmouth has had the results of its first Ofsted-style inspection.
The Care Quality Commission concluded it provided safe and effective services, and staff treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
But inspectors also found that some community services were stretched and struggled to meet demand.
Areas praised included the children’s outreach assessment and support team, which helps keep children out of hospital, the homeless healthcare team and the specialist community palliative care team.
And the CQC said improvements needed to be made in the following areas:
n People are at risk of being turned away from sexual health services because of the demand for services. There could be long waiting times for walk-in clinics which were sometimes cancelled.
n Review the layout of the Kite Unit, a specialist brain injury unit at St James’ Hospital to ensure it complies with guidance on segregating male and female patients, and on managing risks from fixtures and fittings which could be used as ligature points.
n Making sure the caseload of each adult mental health community team are supported by enough skilled and experienced staff including consultant psychiatrists.
Professor Sir Mike Richards, chief inspector of hospitals, said: ‘We found a highly-committed and caring workforce that was, for the most part, meeting the needs of all those people safely and effectively.
‘We did find some areas for improvement – notably in the capacity and staffing of some community teams and clinics which meant that people don’t always get the treatment they need as soon as they should.’
The trust said it has addressed the points raised.
It said it is looking to expand and review its sexual health services; will fit two new bedrooms in the Kite Unit that will be gender specific, and it has doubled medical staff input for caseloads.
Dr Ros Tolcher, trust chief executive, said: ‘Receiving the CQC final report, which highlights the things we can do to further improve services as well as the many positive things we have in place, is a significant milestone for anyone associated with this trust.’
