LITTLE Sam Merrick was born at Queen Alexandra Hospital weighing just 1lb 6oz.

The four-year-old has a number of health issues, but his parents Louise and Paul Merrick, of Bere Road, Denmead, believe the paediatric team at QA have helped give him a life.

Louise said: ‘Sam has grown into a cheeky, adaptable young boy, whose smile and laughter can light up even the darkest of rooms. While I would love to take all the credit for this, it’s just not the case.

‘Sam has spent more than three-quarters of his life in hospital spending many birthdays, Christmases and other special occasions in a hospital room.

‘Because of this Sam has more than 50 extended “family members” from consultants right down to the domestic staff always on the end of the phone to give advice.

‘The paediatric team at QA have not only saved and brought our son back to life on many occasions, nursed him through illnesses and held his hand when cannulas are needed, they have helped raise our son.

‘Some may see this as part of their “job” but we beg to differ.’

The team have been put forward in the Hospital Team of the Year category at our Best of Health Awards 2013.

Senior sister Penny McDougall said: ‘We are delighted Sam and his family have nominated the team.

‘It’s lovely that they have taken the time to show their appreciation in this way.’
