240 miles in just 24 hours to raise money for unit
FOUR friends will cycle 240 miles in just 24 hours to help a children’s unit that helps patients from across Hampshire.
The paediatric intensive care unit (Picu) at Southampton General Hospital provides specialist care for children from all around the county.
And on July 7, four friends from Alton will be taking part in an epic journey that will see them cycle all over the South Coast – including a ride through Portsmouth.
Simon Hewitt, 30, James Farquhar, 35, Paul Mundy, 34, and Darren May, 39, were inspired to take on the fundraising challenge after the daughter of two friends died at the unit.
Grace-Mae Chiverton, three, suffered from a very rare type of aneurysm on her brain, and died last July.
Money raised from the cycle ride will be donated to Friends of Picu.
Secretary of the group Mark Hilder said: ‘The money raised will start the fundraising for the next state-of-the-art ambulance.
‘This is a vital piece of equipment which enables the Picu to retrieve critically ill children from across the South and get them to the unit to receive the specialist care they require.’
In all £110,000 is needed for the ambulance.
The team hope their cycle ride will raise £25,000.
