BIG-hearted firefighters have brought a smile to hospital staff after raising £1,000 for a neonatal unit.
A team of fundraisers, including Cosham firefighters and local colleges and businesses, presented a cheque of £1,000 to the neonatal unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital after fundraising throughout 2012.
Watch manager Stuart Vince and firefighter Paul Groom completed fundraising challenges throughout the year to raise money.
The crew turned the fire station into a Santa’s grotto in December and invited 40 children from the paediatrics unit, presenting each child with a gift worth £100.
The £1,000 cheque was the remaining money from the Christmas party.
Mr Groom said: ‘We picked the neonatel unit as the majority of the children that attended the Christmas party had been through the unit in their life, and from discussions with the ward staff we were aware that they were trying to raise money for therapy lights for incubators which cost a staggering £17,000 each.
‘We’ve done so well with fundraising throughout 2012 thanks to the extra support we received from local businesses and schools such as CPG Logistics, South Downs College and the City of Portsmouth Girls School. If it wasn’t for their efforts then we wouldn’t have been able to host the Christmas party and present this cheque to neonatal.’
