GRATEFUL parents Louise and Paul Merrick say the paediatric team at QA saved their son Sam’s life.
Louise and Paul, of Bere Road, in Denmead, put the team forward in this year’s Best of Health Awards for Hospital Team of the Year.
Judges were touched by the tale of how the team care not only for their son, Sam, four, but for the family as a whole.
They picked up their trophy at Friday’s ceremony, held in the Portsmouth Guildhall.
Penny McDougall said: ‘We were shocked to have won, but we’re thrilled. It’s not just about Sam, but looking after the family as a whole. He’s got brothers and sisters, and it’s hard for everyone.’
Sam was born at Queen Alexandra Hospital weighing 1lb 6oz. The four-year-old has a number of health issues, and his parents believe the paediatric team at QA have helped give him a life.
Louise said: ‘The team have not only saved and brought our son back to life on many occasions, nursed him through illnesses and held his hand when cannulas are needed, they’ve helped raise our son.’
