Drive for pregnant women to get flu jab

GETTING vaccinated against flu is the best way to protect yourself and your baby from the virus – that’s the message coming from a health trust.

Gill Walton, is director of midwifery for Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Queen Alexandra Hospital, in Cosham.

She is encouraging pregnant women to have a free flu jab to protect themselves and their child.

She said: ‘The great news is if you are pregnant and live in Portsmouth, you can now get the flu jab from your midwife in the antenatal clinic as well as your GP.

‘You can have the jab at any stage of pregnancy, and there is some evidence it may also help protect your baby after birth.’

According to primary care trust NHS Portsmouth, last year less than 28 per cent of pregnant women in the city were vaccinated against flu.

But the message seems to be getting across.

The latest data shows that by October this year, 26 per cent of mums-to-be have already had the jab.
