Fire service to look at dementia

THE fire service covering Hampshire says it is dedicated to keeping people suffering from dementia safe.

A national report found many fire-related deaths in the country involved people aged 60 and over.

In March last year, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service identified that two-thirds of the county’s fire deaths involved people aged 60 and over.

To tackle this, the service has vowed to support the creation of dementia-friendly communities, and protect those living with the condition in order to reduce fire deaths.

The force aims to do this by raising awareness of home safety visits and other preventative measures, and offering advice at the design stage of building developments, so people can stay independent and safe in their own homes.
