Help a dementia patient and become their friend

HELP stop people with dementia feeling lonely by becoming a ‘befriender’.

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, more than 2,227 people live with the condition in Portsmouth, but want to remain independent and engaged with the community.

And people can make this happen by volunteering to see people with dementia to keep them company.

Eibhlis Dixon, befriending scheme manager, said: ‘If you get on well with people and enjoy a good chat you may really enjoy being a volunteer befriender.

‘It is very rewarding and for an hour or two of your time each week you can make a real difference to someone’s life.

‘We offer all our volunteers training and support and pay all out-of-pocket expenses.

‘Volunteers visit once a week to provide a listening ear or support with activities.

‘So far the scheme in Portsmouth has been a brilliant success but we still need more volunteers so that we can help more people with dementia’
