Help halt Norovirus by keeping good hygiene

HEALTH bosses are urging people to help tackle the winter Norovirus by keeping up good hygiene practices.

The interim director of public health for Portsmouth, Dr Ruth Milton, has given advice to members of the public on how to keep the sickness at bay.

She said: ‘It’s estimated around 900,000 people nationally have had Norovirus this season, but locally we’ve not been affected any more severely than elsewhere in the UK.

‘We can all do our bit to keep it that way by staying at home if we’re affected and paying particular attention to hygiene.

‘Norovirus isn’t a pleasant experience but it’s not one that’s generally dangerous and you should start to feel better after a couple of days.’

The advice being given out is to:

· Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and water, particularly after any episodes of vomiting or diarrhoea and before eating food.

· Disinfect any hard surfaces you touch.

· Do not share towels or flannels, which should be washed, along with bedding, at temperatures of 60 degrees.

· Stay at home for at least 48 hours after the symptoms have gone, even if you are feeling better.

· Do not visit hospitals or care homes if you have had symptoms of Norovirus in the last 48 hours.
