Anyone who knows me will know that I’m passionate about health and helping people get the most out of life, whatever that looks like for them.
My main interest is in helping people win, no matter what the game, but I have a particular interest in all things body fat related.
This has lead me to really think about the information we are given relating to ‘how to lose weight’.
Recently I’ve been thinking about our (as in, the world’s) approach to fat loss, and it dawned on me why, despite so much attention on diet and fitness, we are still an expanding nation in the grips of an obesity epidemic.
It occurred to me that, while some of the ‘common knowledge’ criteria for successful weight loss (i.e. low calorie, 500-calorie deficit etc) are actually incredibly misleading and in fact,
incorrect, the majority of people have at least some idea as to what they should be eating and what they shouldn’t.
I think we’re all aware that living on a diet of chocolate and crisps probably isn’t going to win us any body transformation contests.
However, there is still plenty of misleading inform-ation on the right way to
eat and a lot of clever mar-keting surrounding certain foods produced by the diet industry.
But that is actually pretty irrelevant if our eating behaviours are governed by our emotions.
And how much emotional mastery do most people who struggle with their weight usually have when it comes to food?
None. Or for most people very little.
Because no-one really focuses on it.
Everyone just expects to start a diet on Monday and be able to stick to it just because they know what to do and really want to do it.
Or they go to the gym every day and keep going even though they’ve never kept it up before.
It doesn’t work though, does it?
And that’s because the emotional triggers, which are often dealt with subconsciously, haven’t been addressed.
In fact, often, they haven’t even been recognised by the person trying to lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
It’s not a case of willpower as many people seem to think.
Willpower is conscious. This is deep-rooted, sub-conscious, brain chemistry stuff.
And therefore it requires work and attention to change it.
This is why a big focus for me and my clients is on emotional metabolism and not just energy meta-bolism.
It’s in identifying the emotional triggers that cause us to overeat and find comfort in the wrong foods and breaking them.
It’s about finding ways of dealing with stress which we all live with on a daily basis.
It’s about creating shifts in the way we think, both consciously and subconsciously.
