CONSULTANT obstetrician Professor Alan Cameron was part of the consultation and says more research is needed.
He said: ‘The majority of babies who are severely affected by GBS are born prematurely and will not be picked up by the screening test.
‘A large number of women would be treated in labour following a positive screening test.
‘Many of them will no longer carry GBS by the time they are treated, and the effect of antibiotic use is unknown.
‘We know very little about this and data from Northern Ireland showing three cases of severe maternal anaphylaxis shows we need to know more.’
