MORE than a quarter of children in Portsmouth are living in poverty, according to a new report out today.
Figures show that in Portsmouth North, 23 per cent of children are classed as living in poverty.
But the picture for Portsmouth South is worse, as 32 per cent of children are in this category.
The information has been collated by charity Campaign to End Child Poverty.
Overall, the figures state in Portsmouth, 27 per cent of children are in poverty.
In the figures, children are classified as being in poverty if they live in families receiving out of work benefits or in-work tax credits where their reported income is less than 60 per cent of median income (around £18,200 for a household with two children).
Enver Solomon, chairman of the campaign, said: ‘The child poverty map reveals the depth and breadth of child poverty across the country showing the gross levels of inequality that children face in every region.
‘Far too many children, whose parents are struggling to make a living, are having to go hungry and miss out on the essentials of a decent childhood that all young people should be entitled to.’
In Fareham, 11 per centof children are classed as being in poverty, Gosport is higher with 21 per cent and Havant higher still with 24 per cent.
