AN EXTRA £2m has been given to the trust that runs Queen Alexandra Hospital.

The Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group had already earmarked £105.5m of its £248m budget for 2013/14 for the acute hospital in Cosham.

But it has found a further £2m, which the CCG said is thanks to ‘good housekeeping’, which has been given to Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

Chief finance officer Jo Gooch said: ‘The money will be used to further underpin the CCG’s continued support to PHT.

‘It has become available as the CCG has managed to remain within budget this year and from a sum set aside as a possible contingency which has not been required.

‘It will be used to secure improvement in patient outcomes as well as organisational financial stability.

‘The CCG fully appreciates that PHT, like many acute hospitals, faces many financial pressures and it is obviously in everyone’s interests – and particularly our patients – that we help them as much as we can.’

The hospital trust refused to reveal exactly how the money would be spent, but that it would be used to make service improvements.

A PHT spokesman said: ‘We intend to use the extra money to continue our programme to transform services.

‘This is to meet increasing health needs and to continue to provide high-quality services within our available financial resources – and to enable greater focus on service and quality improvement.’

As reported, the trust was given an extra £1.4m in December to help ease winter pressure on A&E.

That was used to fund extra clinical staff at the weekend, and improve community services partnership work.

This year, PHT will get about £362m from the three commissioning groups in the south-east Hampshire area.

Alongside the Portsmouth CCG, this also includes Fareham and Gosport, and South Eastern Hampshire.

It means around 55p of every pound spent in health locally goes to the hospital trust.
