Smoking at hospital doors puts health of others in danger too
TIME TO QUIT Dr Edmund Neville, respiratory consultant at QA Hospital, looks at an X-ray from a patient who has a chest irregularity
IF you smoke when others are around you, it’s not just your own health you may put at risk.
Dr Edmund Neville, a respiratory consultant at Queen Alexandra Hospital, says up to five per cent of lung cancer cases are from people who are not smokers.
Usually it’s because they have been exposed to second-hand smoking. Even small amounts of exposure can cause people to have breathing problems or aggravate existing conditions.
That’s why Dr Neville has thrown his weight behind a new drive backed by The News to stop people smoking outside the main entrances of the Cosham hospital.
He said: ‘Second-hand smoking is a problem – it causes five per cent of lung cancers. This means if you see a person who is not a smoker, you ask them if they have family or friends who are. People smoking outside the hospital building means they could be causing aggravation to others and themselves.’
Dr Neville added: ‘People need to have more consideration for others.’
The hospital and The News have launched a poster competition, aimed at encouraging people to move away and stop smoking outside the entrance. The competition is open to people of all ages.
The winning design will be made into a poster and its designer will also win £100. Second prize wins £75, while third prize is £50.
The closing date for the competition is February 28.
To enter, send your poster, along with the completed voucher printed above, to: QA Poster Competition, The News Centre, Hilsea, Portsmouth, PO2 9SX.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 11:57 PMNo intelligent person smokes these days. How can anybody have any self esteem when they reek of stale smoke? Surely they know that people look down at them for having no will power? Losers......

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 10:20 PMThey should have told Roy Castle that then... all those years playing in clubs full of smoke, never smoked in his life... but others smoking killed him... It clearly says at QA that the grounds are not to be smoked in... obviously a hell of a lot of people smoking who need the eye department!

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 09:42 PMUnless you read the BMA report into passive smoking, the results found NO link to passive smoking and illness thereby. This was report was hidden until recently when it became available to the BBC..! So then there is the forty year study by American doctors, once again no link to passive smoking. Now whilst I smoke, I believe that smoking should be banned in certain locations, pubs should have the option to be smoking or non smoking and hospitals should have dedicated areas outside for smokers to use. Its called democracy, having the freedom to choose, without upseting or hurting others. Democracy has been lost to PC rubbish and facts hidden to cover others agendas. Now tell an MP he cannot smoke in Parliament and you get told, its a palace so its not applicable.. seem fair does it?

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 07:47 PMHow does it affect people passing on a bus Will they die before leaving the Hospital Grounds. It is so dangerous to have a cigarette that the "Last fag" practice on US Death Row has been suspended. Presume the prisoner is likely to die between hisherits last puff and the first shock from the chair.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 05:34 PMIt's a fact that smokers will die before non smokers. I say let them continue with their disgusting, filthy, stinking habit as their premature demise means the state will not have to pay out an old age pension and here will be more in the kitty for the rest of us! Simples!

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 01:37 PMit is not just Visitors and Patients that are smoking around the entrance, many staff also go outside for a smoke, not just the main entrance either, also outside the outpatients entrance and outside A&E.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 12:57 PMPost 5, your smoking near me will affect me, but my non smoking near you will not affect you. Think about it, not just the smoke, but the dog ends you leave behind.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 11:10 AMIt will take years and years for the affects of someone elses smoke to affect you.Especially if you are just walking by for a split second. I beer and getting into a car can hurt you alot quicker then smoke from a cigarette can. Stop living in fear for many people have smoked for many years and have no problems,if you don't like it then don't force others to stop to conform to your ways for when you conform to others ways you are in fact "Selling your soul".

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 10:05 AMMany people agree on this one. To see the patients outside the main doors of QA smoking themselves to death is a sickening sight for those of us who have worked inside the hospital and seen the damage and heartache cigarettes cause. There is a security force present on site, mainly to deal with ongoing violence but I'm sure if they were instructed to approach these people at the entrance thy could keep them away. It just shows how some people value the expertise at QA by insisting on damaging their bodies even though money is being spent on their treatment. It can be dealt with quickly but it needs the hospital "suits" to actually clamp down on this vile practice and make sure it really is a no smoking site.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 10:01 AMI thought you weren't allowed to smoke within 20metres of an entrance? I certainly don't.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 09:27 AMI thought I saw signs saying QA was a non smoking SITE. So why is smoking still permitted outside the building entrances? If cars are wrongly parked a ticket rapidly appears!
