Tony Oakey provided a knockout display when he got in the ring more than 50 times in one day for charity.

Adults had the chance to spar with the former British, Commonwealth and WBU light-heavyweight boxing champion.

The event, held at Leigh Park ABC, in the Leigh Park Community Centre, Dunsbury Way, was organised to raise money for Jack Robinson.

As reported in The News, the four-year-old was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour last month, and has been given only a five per cent chance of survival.

The story touched the heart of Mr Oakey, who also has twins.

The former boxer, known in his pro days as the Leigh Park Warrior, said: ‘After I read Jack’s story in The News, I felt like I wanted to do something.

‘It really touched me, especially as I have twins and I see them as inseparable, so I wanted to help.

‘I was impressed by the number of people that turned up and showed their support. It really shows how good the Leigh Park community is.’

Mr Oakey, along with Peter Vince, a boxing coach for the Leigh Park Boxing Club, put on a charity sparathon.

Adults paid £20 to get in the ring with Mr Oakey for three minutes.

Money made from donations to spar, as well as refreshments sold, is going to Jack, in order to help make his wishes come true.

Darren McKenna, 35, of Bedhampton, is a school governor for Warren Park Primary School, Leigh Park, and a full-time carer for his grandad.

Even though he’s never boxed before, Mr McKenna decided to give it a go and help raise money for Jack.

He said: ‘I was tired after only a minute – it’s amazing what Tony does.

‘He’s a good friend and I gave it a go to help raise money.

‘It was hard work though.’

Prior to the sparathon, Leigh Park boxing club had already raised £2,000.

Mr Vince said: ‘We wanted to get behind this and show what a community can do.

‘Through bucket collections at the club, and talking to people, we have raised about £2,000 already.’
