Widow still waiting for apology from travel operator over holiday

THE wife of a man who has now died from lung cancer said she is appalled a travel operator has not written an apology after advising her to take another passenger on a prebooked holiday.

Keith Quick, 61, died earlier this month after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in May this year.

Mr Quick and his wife Chris, 58, of Curtis Mead, Hilsea, had booked and paid for a trip to Benidorm last month to celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary.

But when Mr Quick went to the GP about a persistent cough, the couple were given the devastating news he had lung cancer, and would not be able to go on holiday.

They were left further distraught by travel operator Thomson after they went to cancel the trip, only to be asked if Mrs Quick could take another passenger instead.

Mrs Quick, a retired support worker for a women’s refuge, said: ‘It’s really appalling that they still haven’t sent a letter of apology.

‘I haven’t had the time to chase the company up on it because Keith went downhill very quickly, and my concern wasn’t about the travel operator at that time.

‘They did reimburse some money, but it’s not about that. It was about the way they spoke to my daughters when they called to cancel the holiday.

‘One of my girls was told to “shut up” at one point.

‘There was never an apology for that.’

As reported, the Quicks went on holiday to Benidorm about four times a year to see friends.

They had used Thomson for the past four years and thought the firm would show more compassion.

Thomson paid back £538 for the holiday in June, which cost £1,900.

An October holiday that had also been booked is still being settled.

Mrs Quick added: ‘Keith died at home surrounded by his friends and family.

‘I knew it was time for him to go and I said to him “I love you Mr Quick” and then he went very quickly.

‘We had met in the Fox and Hounds pub in Purbrook. I was going into the army and was having farewell drinks in the pub and Keith was there separately.

‘After talking to him I knew I couldn’t go in the army, we got engaged and then married soon after.

‘He was my soulmate, a marvellous cheeky man and was just amazing.’

Mr Quick’s funeral takes place tomorrow in Portchester Crematorium, followed by a wake at the Golden Hind pub in Copnor.

He is survived by his three daughters and nine grandchildren.

TRAVEL company Thomson has said it will not comment further on issuing a written apology.

The News contacted the firm in May, which at the time issued a statement.

When we contacted them a second time, we were referred to the first comment, which said: ‘Thomson is very sorry to hear that Mr and Mrs Quick were unhappy with the service they received when cancelling their holiday.

‘We sympathise with their situation and understand this must be a very difficult time.

‘Our customer service and retail teams always aim to offer the best possible service to all customers and this includes providing them with details of all the options available to them.

‘We would like to reassure the couple that we never intended to cause offence or undue upset by providing this information.’
