HER design captured the spirit of Christmas – and teenager Sezen Gurel has been picked as the winner of a design competition.

Young patients at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, were asked to put their creative skills to the test when they took part in a competition to design the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust Christmas card.

About 30 children in the hospital’s paediatric department entered the competition which was judged by the trust’s chairman, Professor David Rhind.

The winning entry was by Sezen, who drew a festive Christmas tree and winter scene.

The 14-year-old of South Street, Gosport, had to stay in the hospital because she had suffered from a fit the night before.

Sezen, a Brune Park School pupil, said: ‘I was kept in overnight so they could see if it happened again.

‘While I was there a nurse asked me if I wanted to enter the card competition. I put on the things I like about Christmas and what I look forward too, which is the presents.

‘I’m pleased my card was chosen and was surprised it got picked.’

Sezen’s design has been turned into a Christmas card and is being sent to the trust’s many partners, stakeholders and commissioners.

She was also presented with a certificate.

Professor Rhind said: ‘As always we’ve had many fantastic entries.

‘Several combined traditional Christmas scenes with vivid imaginations.

‘The entries were of an extremely high standard showing different aspects of the spirit of Christmas.

‘I would like to say a massive thank you to all of you who took part.’

The competition’s runners up Jared Pearce and Olivia Hornsby were also presented with prizes.
