ORGAN donation in the south central region – which covers the Portsmouth area – has increased by almost 40 per cent in the past five years.

Figures released by NHS Blood and Transplant show there were 54 deceased organ donations in 2007/08.

This rose to 74 deceased organ donations in 2012/13 – an increase of 37 per cent.

And in the last financial year, eight of those donations took place in Queen Alexandra Hospital, in Cosham.

Work is being done nationally to encourage more people to become donors.
