THE MP for Portsmouth South has taken a look around a brain tumour research facility.
Penny Mordaunt was given a guided tour of the Brain Tumour Research laboratories at the University of Portsmouth.
She joined supporters of the charity being shown round the research centre of excellence by lead scientist Professor Geoff Pilkington.
Ms Mordaunt said: ‘I’m proud to say we have this leading research taking place in Portsmouth. More than 600 people are diagnosed with brain tumours in the south east a year and yet research to find better treatments and cures is woefully underfunded.
‘We were shocked to hear brain tumours are now the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 and yet the science needed to find a cure receives just one per cent of the cancer research spend in this country.
‘Without the hard work and efforts of the charity, long-term programmes of research in dedicated centres would simply not be happening.’
