TESTING for HIV is to be offered in Portsmouth as part of an upcoming awareness week.

A team from Solent NHS Trust will provide free testing at Tropics Day Spa in Marketway, Landport on Tuesday, December 1 from 1pm to 5pm.

A spokesman from the trust said the biggest challenges in fighting HIV were late diagnoses and the reluctance of people coming forward to get tested. ‘The test is a simple finger prick with the results often available in 60 seconds, which makes this programme of HIV testing an easy and convenient way of helping people to know their HIV status,’ the spokesman said.

‘Having a test in a community setting can really help put someone at ease. For some, going into a sexual health clinic can be as big a barrier as having the test itself, so we want to do everything possible to ensure those taking the test are as relaxed and comfortable as possible.’
