MORE people are giving up smoking in the county, new figures reveal.

NHS Hampshire has exceeded its quit smoking target for the third year running.

The latest results for 2010/11 show that 16,824 Hampshire residents used the Quit4Life service provided by Southern Health and a total of 8,886 smokers quit for good – 224 more people than in 2009/10.

Dr Ruth Milton, director of public health for NHS Hampshire, said: ‘These fantastic results have been achieved with the support of many Hampshire GPs and community pharmacies who work in partnership with Quit4Life to provide the NHS stop smoking service.

‘Local authorities, community groups and volunteer organisations also provide valuable support through their websites, magazines and events ensuring that local residents know how to contact the Quit4Life service.’

Anyone who wants help to quit smoking can call Quit4Life on 0845 602 4663, or visit quit4life.nhs.uk or text QUIT to 60123.
