WORK on a new outdoor gym, free to everyone to use has nearly finished.

Havant Borough Council and Hampshire County Council have funded the gym off St Clare’s Avenue, Leigh Park, which will have nine heavy duty pieces of equipment ready to use 365 days of the year.

The gym equipment includes two space walkers, two skiers, triple pull-ups, pull down exerciser, leg press, chest press and a body twister.

There are also rectangular concrete structures which can be used as step-up boxes plus round structures for a slalom run for joggers or even leap frog.

County councillor Liz Fairhurst added; ’I think the facility is well placed in Leigh Park giving local people the opportunity to use it whenever they want.

‘The health benefits of regular physical activity are key to a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing.

‘Our commitments to work and family life do not allow us to fit exercise in at a set time. This outdoor gym facility gives everyone the freedom to do exercise at a time to suit themselves.’

Community development officer Georgina Roger held a consultation with residents who got to try out the equipment and the most popular pieces were selected for the outdoor gym.

The official launch will be September 16 at midday at St Clare’s Church Hall.

However, it can be used as soon as it’s complete.
